About Eric Ferguson

Eric Ferguson is the author of the September 2023 novel Cold Record.

Born in Texas and raised in Los Angeles, Ferguson graduated with honors from Chapman University School of Law in 2004.  He has been a prosecutor in southern California since 2005, primarily focused on habeas corpus and post-conviction litigation.  He and his wife Susanne are the parents of two grown children.  Cold Record is his first novel.

 The son of professional writers, Eric Ferguson was born in Houston, Texas, in 1964, but moved to Los Angeles with his parents at age three. In 1972 he was a founding student at the Area H Alternative School, the first alternative school in the Los Angeles Unified School District, and attended it through high school.   

On graduating from Cal State University, Los Angeles, in 1987, Ferguson spent six months in England, where he met his wife Susanne. On his return he went to work as a journalist and editor for Brain/Mind Bulletin, the newsletter founded by his parents in 1975. His mother, Marilyn Ferguson, gained renown as the author of the seminal The Aquarian Conspiracy(Tarcher, 1980), which sold 1.5 million copies worldwide.   

After Brain/Mind Bulletin ceased publication in 1996, Ferguson spent several years working as a corporate and marketing copywriter before pivoting to law. He graduated with honors from Chapman University School of Law in 2004, where he served on the editorial board of the Chapman Law Review.   

Upon passing the California bar exam, Ferguson was hired as a deputy district attorney for a large Southern California county in January 2005, and spent the first five years in a remote, semi-rural office prosecuting a wide range of cases. In 2010, he joined the office’s specialized unit handling writs and appeals, where he has, in the years since, focused heavily on writs of habeas corpus and other post-conviction litigation in murder cases. He has also represented the People at more than 50 parole-suitability hearings for convicted murderers since 2012.   

Eric and his wife, Susanne, are the parents of two adult children now living abroad. Cold Record – written over a period of more than a decade – is his first novel.
